This week Filmhouse is screening two films that premiered earlier this year at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done
Fri 29 Oct to Sun 31 Oct

Werner Herzog directs. David Lynch produces. Exhilarating curiosity ensues.

Michael Shannon is Brad, holed up in his house after allegedly killing his mother. The cops have him surrounded. Gradually, through a serious of dark, weird and wonderful flashbacks as told by friends and neighbours, Detective Hank Havenhurst (Willem Dafoe) pieces together the strange tale of how this nice young man arrived at such a dark place.

Based on a true story, this gripping and unnerving blend of deadpan comedy, melodrama and raw tragedy is fleshed out by a brilliant cast, including Chloë Sevigny, Michael Peña and Lynch regular Grace Zabriskie.

Donkeys
Mon 1 Nov to Thu 4 Nov

The best of Scottish acting talent, in a witty, warm and moving family drama.

The second feature to emerge from the Scottish-Danish Advance Party project – after Andrea Arnold’s worldwide sensation Red Road – is a tangled tale of friendship, forgiveness and deep-seated family secrets, enlivened by a strain of dark and thoroughly eccentric humour. After a somewhat misspent life, Alfred (James Cosmo) wants to make amends – but can his guarded daughter Jackie (Kate Dickie) bring herself to forget the past?

The 6:15pm show on Monday 1 November will be introduced by the film’s director, Morag McKinnon, who will take part in a Q&A after the screening.
