Police in Edinburgh are appealing for information after a man was critically injured in an assault that happened in the Leith area of the Capital in the early hours of Monday morning.

The victim, who is in his 20s, suffered a serious head injury in the assault, which happened in the Cables Wynd area, around 1am. A member of the public who heard the disturbance called police to the scene, and the victim was found outside Cables Wynd House.

He was taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, and he remains in a critical condition. Two men have been detained in connection with the incident, and police are appealing for any potential witnesses to come forward.

A police spokesman said: “We want to speak to anyone who was in the area of Cables Wynd in the early hours of this morning, who either saw what happened or who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area, to get in touch as a matter of urgency. “Anyone else who thinks they have any information that can assist our inquiries should also contact police.”

The suspect is described as white, 20 to 25-years-old, 5ft 10ins tall, with short dark hair, and wearing a blue t-shirt.

A police spokesman said: “While the victim’s injuries are not life-threatening, he still suffered a serious chest wound as a result of this attack, and we are appealing for any information that can help us trace the suspect.

“Anyone who witnessed the assault, which happened outside a block of flats in Westburn Park, should contact police immediately.

“Similarly, anyone who recognises the description of the suspect, or who has any other information that can help our inquiries, should also get in touch.”
