Link Group has named the winner of its competition to help name a major affordable housing development in Craigmillar, Edinburgh.

Primary 5 pupil Caitlin McKenzie suggested the winning name – King’s Place. Caitlin and her classmates at Niddrie Mill Primary School researched the history of Craigmillar and surrounding areas to help them generate ideas.

Craig Sanderson, Link Chief Executive, explains why this name was chosen: “We loved Caitlin’s suggestion because of its ties to the royal history of the area. Not only does King relate to the origins of the Gaelic word for Niddrie but it can be linked to the Battle of Niddrie Edge in 1594 where Bothwell, one of Mary Queen of Scots husbands, fought against supporters of her son King James VI. The area is also closely linked to Bonnie Prince Charlie who set up camp nearby and would have certainly rallied supporters to the Jacobite cause and a new king”.

To thank the children for their hard work in the project, Craig Sanderson presented a cheque for £500 to Kathryn Foley their class teacher as a donation to school funds.

Ms Foley, Niddrie Mill Primary 5 Teacher, said:- “On behalf of the school I would like to thank Link for their very generous donation. This partnership project provided a very real and exciting opportunity for the children to further develop their research skills and through naming this development, have created a lasting legacy for their community.”

The development at Wauchope Square will now be known as King’s Place when the properties are marketed for sale later this year. The development is being built by Lovell on behalf of Link and consists of 31 homes to rent, 15 Shared Ownership and 12 New Supply Shared Equity properties. The site is Phase 8 of a major regeneration development by joint venture company PARC.
