Two years ago, Hannah Livingston was a Dundee jewellery graduate like any other, preparing to exhibit at the renowned New Designers exhibition in Islington, London.

Now she is a multi-award winning jewellery designer, opening a family-run design boutique ‘Black Box’ in the heart of the buzzing Grassmarket, Edinburgh. The Grand Opening took place on the 15 July 2011. What a difference a year (or two) makes.

Black Box is an independent design boutique, mixing vintage curios with bizarre Edwardian-style display, showcasing Britain’s most exceptionally curious jewellery, textiles, ceramics, illustration, and more. As well as top notch designers you will also find the in-house jewellery studio where, from the shop floor, you can eye-spy the Black Box jewellers working on the latest collection.

Black Box aims to champion British-based design, with a selection of both graduate and established designer makers under its roof. By demonstrating the design process and inviting customers to be actively curious, the boutique illuminates the ins and outs of why independent design is worth investing in. “We believe the backstory to a piece of design is as important as the object itself – if you can understand how and why the designer has done what they have done, the work suddenly becomes utterly engaging,” said Hannah, who designs and makes her popular box locket jewellery in the boutique.

For a chance to snap-up a Black Box treasure before the secret’s out, come tumbling down the rabbit hole and visit the boutique at 98 West Bow, Grassmarket, Edinburgh  EH1 2HH. Prices range from £15 – £700. Open now!
