Snow – Pigeons killed in Balerno – RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch – Marketing Edinburgh – Dr Livingstone

We quite like the snow, and so do some of you it appears! We asked this morning for snow photos and we will be publishing the selection from you in a little while.

In the meantime we have heard reports of a sledging accident on Blackford Hill where an ambulance crew are rescuing a 16 year-old boy. The access is of course quite difficult and the crew have initially tried to use an all-terrain vehicle to bring him off the hill, but may have to use a line to reach him.

So take care! Although we have seen some gritters and mini-snowploughs out on the pavements in the city centre there is still some covering in places. There is information from the council about winter weather here on their website.

Police in Edinburgh are appealing for information after a total of 55 pigeons were killed following break-ins to two huts in the Balerno area during the night on Thursday.

The racing pigeons each had their necks broken following the break-in to the huts, which are located at an allotment at Malleny Croft, near Currie Rugby Club.

The estimated cost of the dead pigeons is approximately £5,000.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said:- “This is a disturbing incident, not least for the owner of the pigeons who is understandably upset as a result of what has happened.

“We are appealing to anyone who was in the area yesterday evening or overnight, who saw or heard any suspicious activity, to contact police immediately.

“Likewise, anyone else who has any other information that can assist us in our enquiries should also get in touch.”

The Edinburgh Evening News has an interview with the owner here.

As long as there is not too much snow for you  this morning, or maybe even if there is, you are invited to get along to the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh to help in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch.  Today and tomorrow from 12pm to 3.30pm you are promised crafts and games as well.

You could also go to Gorgie City Farm next weekend to help them with their big bird audit next weekend…

Watch the film below to see what you might be able to do to help.

The Drum has reported this week that Marketing Edinburgh is to be led by a temporary board until a new CEO is found following the departure of Lucy Bird last month after the Incredinburgh campaign which was slated by so many in the city.

The temporary board is headed up by Gordon Robertson who is Edinburgh Airport’s Director of Communications. Perhaps one of the things they might turn their attention to is Marketing Edinburgh’s web presence. We think it is pretty poor. What do you think? You will find it here.

We presume you might be looking for somewhere indoors today and there can be nowhere better than the National Museum of Scotland on Chambers Street. An ideal destination for all ages! And child friendly now that the fish ponds have gone… They have the Dr Livingstone exhibition on until 7 April. Watch this video to find out more.
