The site of a former paper mill in Edinburgh has inspired a group of six up-and-coming artists who all work with the material to stage their first joint exhibition.

The group of women – who call themselves the Bonnington 6 – have been meeting in the studio of well-known Edinburgh artist Jenny Smith in Bonnington Mill, Newhaven Road, over the past year to share creative ideas and provide support to each other.

Later this month the artists – Lel Blair, Fiona Gardiner, Diana Hand, Lesley Helfer, Lucy Jones and Mary Lambie – are staging a combined exhibition of their work including collage, charcoal drawing, oil painting and sewing.

Mary Lambie said : “We all work with paper in some way so it’s fitting that we’ve all got to know each other through meeting on the site of an old paper mill.

“Bonnington village itself also has a historical tradition stretching back 800 years as a centre of craft so it is great that it is playing a part in helping a modern-day group of artists establish their work.”

The exhibition will be staged at the Patriothall Gallery, Stockbridge between Saturday 31st May to Sunday 8th June (closed Monday and Tuesday) from 12 pm to 6pm.

A ‘Meet the Artists’ event on Sunday 8th June will close the exhibition.

A Facebook page has been set up with more information on the artists and their work at https://www.facebook.com/bonnington6.
