Police are investigating an attempted robbery at an Edinburgh newsagents on the morning of Wednesday 17 September.

A man entered WH Smith on Queensferry Street at around 8.18am and demanded money from the sales assistant who refused and raised the alarm. The man left on foot empty handed, heading out of the store along Queensferry Street Lane and Stafford Street towards Melville Street.

The man is described as white, between 5 foot 5 and 5 foot 7 inches tall, around 25 years old, of slim build with a gaunt appearance and dark hair. He was wearing a white or cream waist-length waterproof hooded jacket with a front pocket in the middle.

Detective Constable Alison Wyllie said: “Nothing was stolen and no-one was injured during the incident but it would have been frightening for the member of staff and customers. This incident happened during the busy rush-hour and school-run period and I want to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time who may have seen the man before or after the attempted robbery.”

Anyone with information should call Police Scotland on 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
