A new short-stay centre is being opened in Edinburgh at the site of a former care home.

Bupa Care Homes have agreed to lease the buildings at the former Pentland Hill Care Home to City of Edinburgh Council (CEC), who will work with NHS Lothian to create the short-stay centre.

The short-stay centre is intended to help the NHS and ease pressures on local hospitals. It will allow patients who do not need hospital care, but are not yet well enough to go home, to be discharged faster and free up space on acute wards.

Patients will stay at the centre only until permanent care places are found for them or they can return to their own homes.

City of Edinburgh Council in conjunction with NHS Lothian will be responsible for all patient care and the upkeep of all the buildings they lease.

Kirsty Dace, director for Bupa Care Homes  in Scotland, said:

“While we have not made a decision about the site’s long-term future, we have agreed that City of Edinburgh Council can lease the buildings to create a short-stay centre in conjunction with NHS Lothian.

“This is a new service to ease pressures on local hospitals and is different to the aged care home that we operated.  As we have said from the start, we have always been open to discussions with local partners.”
