The council was pleased to announce that it had won the prestigious Entente Florale and when the full council met in October the plaque they had received at a ceremony in Budapest was on display in the chamber.

Last night the Lord Provost unveiled the plaque which has now pride of place to the right hand side of the entrance at the City Chambers.

The panel unanimously granted the accolade to Edinburgh and gave special mention to the Grassmarket Community Project for its work to include those who might otherwise be excluded. The Project won the Lucija Cikes Prize.

Lord Provost Donald Wilson said: “This is an immense achievement for Edinburgh, and is testament to the work done by volunteers, community groups and Council staff to maintain the city’s environment to an international standard.
“It is fantastic to be able to celebrate the award in this way, honouring the contribution of all those involved for generations to come.”
Edinburgh was one of 22,000 villages, towns and cities to enter the contest, which is not only judged on horticultural competence but also community involvement and responsibility for the environment.
A number of bodies were involved in the bid, including Historic Scotland, Essential Edinburgh, University of Edinburgh and many other volunteers, community and Friends of Parks groups, representatives of whom were present at the event on Thursday which marked the city’s success.
