dark heart book cover

History in the Pub: Dark Heart – Tales from Edinburgh’s Town Jail with Douglas Skelton. Writer Douglas Skelton’s 2008 book Dark Heart looked at the history of the Edinburgh Tolbooth, the infamous ‘Heart of Midlothian’. For five centuries it stood at the centre of Scotland’s history and criminal life, being at various times a parliament building, court, administrative centre, and ultimately the town jail – Edinburgh’s Bastille. Using the warding books and other documents, letters and printed sources, Douglas tells the stories of some of the people who were imprisoned there, and tries to reclaim this forgotten building’s place in history. Douglas is the author of eleven true crime/Scottish criminal history books. In 2013 he moved into fiction with the thriller Blood City; the sequel Crow Bait was released in 2014. 7.30-9.30pm, The Counting House, West Nicolson Street. History in the Pub talks are free and open to anyone who is interested in the past.
