Graduate Fashion Week George Gold Award

This year’s Graduate Fashion Week has brought a great deal of success for Edinburgh College of Art fashion students.

Numerous accolades were won – including best womenswear collection – at one of the fashion world’s biggest events, which recognises emerging talent.

12 Melissa Villevielle_20150306_2708Melissa Villevieille won the Womenswear Collection of the Year at the glittering ceremony in London. She was also the winner of the Catwalk Textiles Award and the David Band Textiles Prize.

Her heavily embellished collection uses lines and stripes to express movement and energy.

Mal Burkinshaw, Programme Director in Fashion at Edinburgh College of Art, said: “I am absolutely delighted with this year’s successes at GFW. Melissa’s collection demonstrates the outstanding craftsmanship fused with modernity and personality that all our students are encouraged to develop on the programme.

“At ECA, we believe in cultivating individuals with a strong point of view, graduates who will influence our design industries through their visionary thinking, understanding of diverse markets and professionalism. Our students successes show that there is a wealth of design talent coming out of Scotland’s creative industries education, and we are continuing to make a huge impact nationally and internationally.”

Eleanor Paulin was nominated as the runner up for the Karen Millen Best Portfolio of the Year 2015.

Rachael Eustace was awarded second place for the Sophie Hallette Lace Challenge.

Three students were also selected to be part of the Graduate Fashion Week Gala Show, which showcases only 25 of the UK’s top graduating collections.

Graduate Fashion Week is the world’s leading event for fashion students and has launched the careers of Stella McCartney, Julien Macdonald and Christopher Bailey.

Showcasing the work of over 1,000 graduates from some of the most influential UK and international universities,

Fashion and textiles at ECA was recently ranked top in the UK in the Guardian University league table 2016.

It is the only department in Scotland to show on the catwalk at the annual Graduate Fashion Week.
