A male has been arrested and charged with a vehicle theft and road traffic offences as part of Operation RAC which targets housebreakers and car criminals across the city and is the number one priority for local officers.

Yesterday a Honda scooter was stolen from outside an address in Polwarth Crescent and dedicated Operation RAC officers had been pursuing various lines of enquiry, including CCTV analysis to trace those responsible.

As a result of this investigation an 18-year-old was detained and subsequently charged with the theft of the scooter in addition to driving with no insurance and driving while disqualified.

He will appear in court at a later date. Chief Superintendent Mark Williams, (pictured) Divisional Commander for the City of Edinburgh said: “We are targeting housebreakers and car criminals every day and this week Operation RAC officers have had great help from the Air Support Unit.

“Not only does the use of the helicopter provide a visual deterrent against crime, it helps us safely pursue criminals driving at high speeds and gather evidence on film of their activities.

“It’s a great resource to have at our disposal and highlights the benefit of using national assets to assist local policing.

“Housebreaking is my top priority in Edinburgh and the public can help us by making it tough for criminals.
