A cheeky shopper has given the iconic Kelpies statues the “cone treatment”.

Mini versions of the giant structures were put on view to the public on Princes Street, Edinburgh last week.

It was hoped the 10-ft high models, used in the design process, would be a draw for tourists and promote Edinburgh’s West End as a high-class shopping area.

Local entrepreneur Jessica Howarth, 28, has been scooped the Most Environmentally Responsible Business Scotland award from the annual Young Entrepreneur Awards for her inspiring jewellery business.

The scheme run by youth charity The Prince’s Trust Scotland and communications giants BT, has seen more than half a million pounds invested into young entrepreneurs in Scotland. Jessica was one of winners who impressed the judges with her innovative business model.

Having graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Jessica struggled to launch her jewellery company, finding it hard to turn her idea into a sustainable business. Admiring her drive and determination, The Trust decided to offer her the financial support she needed through the BT Scotland Youth Entrepreneurs Awards.

Now with a studio in Summerhall, Jessica works on her various collections and commissions. She also runs day courses on enamelling – a technique used in creating colour and textures by fusing pigments of glass onto metal in a kiln.

Working with precious and non-precious metals, her colourful creations are heavily inspired by her love of travel and experience of different cultures.

On winning Jessica said: “I am absolutely delighted that I have been recognised for being environmentally conscious in my designs and jewellery. It is brilliant news.”

“I feel that my greatest achievement has been the recognition I have received as a jeweller of merit in the very competitive world ofjewellery design. I have developed a client base for both individual commission and collection pieces; and my work is sold at bespoke galleries.”

Working with BT Scotland, the Young Entrepreneur Awards support young people to develop online tools to help grow their business. In the last 13 years, BT Scotland has invested £630,000 in the Young Entrepreneur programme, helping 208 young people to start up in business.

Liz Turner, head of corporate responsibility at BT Scotland, said: “Over the years we have seen some truly inspirational businesses start up with a helping hand from our funding, and it’s been a pleasure to witness their progress. The culture of entrepreneurship is alive and well among Scotland’s young people. Doing business in a sustainable way is important to BT, and we congratulate Jessica on her deserved win.”

Allan Watt, director, The Prince’s Trust Scotland, said: “The Prince’s Trust helps over 600 young Scottish entrepreneurs start up each year. Jessica is a great example of the success our young business owners can have and the contribution their success makes to their local communities.”
