The Edinburgh Reporter Charlotte Square Gardens autumn

The UK’s biggest charity sleep out, Byte Night,  will take place in Charlotte Square this autumn.

On Friday, October 2 over 100 people will spend the night in the city centre square to raise funds for youth homelessness services delivered by Action for Children Scotland.

Before sleepers wrap up for the night in the heart of Edinburgh’s city centre, they will enjoy a reception in the fabulous atrium at 28 Charlotte Square. Here they’ll enjoy hearty food, entertainment, informal networking and meet some of the young people Action for Children helps across Scotland.

The fundraising challenge launched in Edinburgh 8 years ago and was previously held in Holyrood Park.

Rhona Hutchon, director of Harvey Nash and co-chair of the Byte Night Scotland board, said: “We are really excited about our new city centre sleep out site and hope that the people who see us huddled up in the cold as they make their way home from a night out will feel moved to donate.”

Each year, eight simultaneous sleep outs are held across the UK – with last year’s event raising £1.1 million. This helps to fund Action for Children Scotland services across the country, including New Horizons in Haddington, which provides accommodation for homeless young people.

Grant McFarlane, fundraising manager at Action for Children Scotland, said: “Spending the night exposed to the elements can be really difficult, but it does so much good for very vulnerable children and young people in this country. There’s still plenty of time for people in Edinburgh to join us on Charlotte Square – so why not sign up to sleep out now!”
