Police are appealing for witnesses following an attempted robbery which happened around 5.55pm on Monday within MM News Store on Boswall Parkway.

The male suspect entered the store, demanded money from the till and assaulted the shop owner before leaving empty handed.

He was pursued by the shop owner but was lost to sight as he entered Crewe Place.

The suspect is described as white, around 5ft 6in, with a large build and in his early 30s.

He was wearing black cotton jogging bottoms, a black hooded top with a full-length zip and front lower pockets, and a black woolly balaclava covering his face.

Detective Sergeant Lynsey Thomson, of Gayfield Police Station, said: “Thankfully the shop owner didn’t receive any serious injuries and managed to see off his attacker, but it’s still been a frightening experience.

“The suspect spoke with a local accent and we’re looking for information that might help our enquiries.”

Those with any information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or alternatively the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
