A 47-year-old woman has become the second person to be charged with careless driving in relation to flooded roads in the past month after attempting to steer her Volkswagen Polo through 4ft-high flood water on the B712 road at Stobo, near Peebles around 1pm on Wednesday.

Emergency services all worked to remove the woman from her half-submerged car.

Inspector John Scott said: “This is the second incident in December of someone being charged for ignoring road closure signs in the Borders.

“Ignoring these not only risks your own safety, but that of emergency services personnel who will be required to rescue you. It also prevents these vital resources from being able to help other people.

“Please remember that road closures are always in place for a reason. There are no excuses for ignoring these and if you fail to comply, you will be charged.

“If you’re in an area affected by flooding, do not travel unless absolutely necessary. If you need to travel, plan your route in advance and check Traffic Scotland or the Scottish Borders Council website for road closures.”
