The Lord Provost said that a lot of his job is bound up in tradition but he welcomed this opportunity: “I am so glad to be able to do something that the last 33 Lord Provosts have not been able to do! It had better not be as long the next time! There has been a great buzz in the city and this is a day to celebrate and savour and a day to enjoy. It may have been a long time comings let’s make the most of it!

“Hibernian FC were established in 1875 in a hall just off St Mary’s Street and today the open-top bus tour will start off a mere stone’s throw from the birthplace of the club.

“I have had a lot of people congratulating me but I feel a bit of a fraud about it! Of course when I wear the Lord Provost’s chain then I am representing the city and it is the city that is the winner today.”
