Hearts tonight sprang a major surprise by announcing that experienced goalkeeper Neil Alexander, 38, will leave Tynecastle when his present contract runs out in the summer.

The former Scotland goalkeeper arrived at Tynecastle in July 2014 and has been a major figure in establishing Hearts as a major force in the country once again after helping them win promotion last season.

Alexander made 72 appearances for the Maroons during his two year stint in Gorgie.

Hearts Head Coach Robbie Neilson told the club’s official website:

“Everyone at Hearts would like to thank Neil for all his hard work in helping the club to win the Championship and secure third place and European football this season.

“We’ll now look to bring in another goalkeeper as part of our summer recruitment. We wish Neil all the best in the future.”

Alexander posted on social media site Twitter “Unfortunately my time at Hearts has come to an end. I’ve had an amazing two years and am sad to be leaving. Thanks for everyone’s kind messages”
