If you live in a common stair then you should be aware of the changes to repairing and maintaining the lighting there from 1 July 2016. Lighting is an important safety feature in common stairs.

From July the council will only provide a service to fix the stair lighting in blocks which the council owns. So if you live in a common stair where all properties are owned by private individuals, then you will have to make your own arrangements.

The council website explains:

Owners in these blocks have a legal responsibility to make sure the common stair lighting is in working order and does not present a health and safety hazard. To comply with this legal responsibility, all owners within a block must put in place alternative repair and maintenance arrangements.

This can be done by appointing a factor or company to carry out the repair and maintenance of stair lighting in their blocks. Abbeyhill Electrical Services have set up a new service to deal with the situation where the owners have to maintain their own stair lighting. The Cummings brothers will ensure that the lighting and door entry systems in common stairs are kept in working order.

They offer a 24 hour service with a guarantee that an electrician will carry out any required maintenance. Abbeyhill Electrical are specialists in maintaining door entry systems.
