It is now just around the corner. Next week the city will become temporary home to thousands of farmers from across Scotland, all eager to show off their livestock, meet chums old and new, and perhaps even buy some new machinery.

Firmly established as one of Europe’s most impressive celebrations of farming, food and rural life, the Royal Highland Show – which last year attracted almost 190,000 visitors – showcases top quality livestock, food and drink and rural living at its most vibrant.

Across the country livestock farmers old and young are preparing their stock for the show. Photographer Jane Barlow was out in Shotts to take photos of perhaps one of the youngest.

Junior handler Laura Hunter, 16, and cousins Hannah Devine and Alan Marshall, both aged 4, share their ice-cream with Molly, the prize-winning Highland cow calf Dalmore, at Barnhill Farm, Shotts, ahead of the 2016 Royal Highland Show.
Amongst the hard fought livestock competitions, Scotland’s best ice cream producers will also be battling it out as part of the Scottish Ice Cream Championships, which take place in Scotland’s Larder Live, the Show’s very own food event which features over 100 food and drink producers.
