Darren McGregor

Hibs’ defender Darren McGregor is happy with the way that pre-season has gone and he believes that the competition for places in Neil Lennon’s starting XI will be beneficial in the club’s promotion bid.

With Liam Fontaine, Jordon Forster and Paul Hanlon all vying for places in the centre of the defence, McGregor knows that he will have to maintain his form to remain in the team and Lennon has made everyone aware that if their standards drop that they will quickly find themselves dropped.

Hibs travel to face Shrewsbury this afternoon in the last game before the league campaign starts next weekend against Falkirk.

Speaking to Hibs TV, the central defender said: “It has been a hard but fair pre-season. The gaffer has came in an implemented the way he wants us to play and we aware of that. we have had a couple of positive results and we have to build on that.

“The training we have had from the gaffer has made us realise the demands that the up and coming season will have but if you do your had work a the start of the season, that should take care of itself.

“In football it’s a necessity that you have competition for places and having someone waiting in the wings to take your place. It’s healthy competition and I think the gaffer has made it abundantly clear that if your standards slip then you could be out the team.

“In every position there is somebody that can step in, and there’s the emergence of guys like Callum Crane and obviously me, Paul, Fonts and Jordon can play at centre-half and there’s competition in midfield and upfront and that can only benefit the team.”
