A police enquiry is underway after a 32-year-old man suffered serious injuries after being attacked by two men in  Waterloo Place, near Princes Street, at around 12.40pm this afternoon.

Two masked men are believed to have got out of a car before striking the victim on his head and body leaving a large pool of blood on the street.

The attackers then fled in a white car towards Regent Road.

Police said the victim suffered a “number of serious wounds” and was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

Waterloo Place was cordoned off for several hours but has now reopened.

Detective Sergeant Neil Spowart from Gayfield CID said: “This part of the city centre, just past the east end of Princes Street, was very busy at lunchtime with shoppers and visitors, and I want to speak to anyone who was in the area and may have seen the assault or the two men beforehand or afterwards.”
