With this morning’s announcement Norwegian confirm that they are creating 130 crew and pilot jobs in Scotland.

Low-cost airline Norwegian has announced today that there will be a series of new transatlantic flights from Edinburgh to the USA this summer at the rock bottom price of £69.

Norwegian will have 14 new direct flights from Edinburgh to Stewart New York, Providence, Rhode Island and (hurrah!) Hartford Connecticut.

These flights will begin from 15 June 2017.

Norwegian CEO Bjorn Kjos said: “Norwegian is shaking up transatlantic travel once again with ground-breaking fares and never before seen routes. The cost of transatlantic travel has been too high for too long so by connecting Scotland with smaller US airports, we can offer some truly affordable fares, allowing as many people as possible to fly. These new transatlantic routes from Edinburgh builds on the success of our long-haul flights from London into major US cities as we’re now able to offer passengers an even greater choice of affordable travel to the USA.”

Edinburgh Airport’s Chief Executive Gordon Dewar said: “These new low-cost direct services between Scotland’s capital city and the east coast of America are a real game-changer – making travel between these two parts of the world easier than ever before and opening up possibilities to more business and leisure passengers than ever before.

“Norwegian is a great innovative partner for Edinburgh Airport and we look forward to working with them in synergy and delivering more choice, opportunity, jobs and economic growth here in Scotland.”

Scottish Government Minister for Transport and the Islands Humza Yousaf said: “I warmly welcome Norwegian’s increased investment in Scotland, which will bring real benefits to Scotland’s economy and connectivity. I believe that it heralds the beginning of a more strategic and exciting relationship between the Airport, Scotland and Norwegian.

“As Edinburgh’s first low-cost, long-haul carrier, these new flights will help build on Scotland’s strong business links with the USA. They will also help boost our tourism industry by making it even easier for visitors to get a taste of the fantastic experiences Edinburgh and Scotland as a whole have to offer.

“Basing planes in Scotland will also create jobs and is a real vote of confidence in the Scottish aviation market. I have no doubt this is the first step in a successful new relationship between Edinburgh Airport and Norwegian, and we look forward to helping them build on that partnership in the future.”

Norwegian, as European launch customer of the 737 MAX, will use Boeing’s latest aircraft to service the new transatlantic routes. These state-of-the-art aircraft offers a longer range and greater seat capacity than existing single-aisle aircraft. Passengers will be able to travel in a fresh and modern single-class economy cabin with hot and cold food options available to purchase onboard.
