In May 1968 Newcastle Colts visited Shielfield Park to open a first season for the Berwick Bandits in a challenge match.

Now, almost 50 years later, Newcastle Diamonds are back for the Tyne/Tweed Challenge Trophy (first-leg) on Saturday (7pm).

Scott Courtney, Bandits’ new co-promoter, said: “The history between the Bandits and the Diamonds goes back as long as the history of this club.

“Any meeting between us means a lot to the club, riders and fans and we will be going all-out to take a serious lead to Brough Park on Sunday for the deciding leg.”

He added: “Newcastle are a good side and have Robert Lambert and Steve Worrall leading their attack, two of the best and most exciting young British riders in the sport.

“Their skipper is Ludvig Lindgren is backed up by Lewis Rose, Ashley Morris, Danny Phillips and Connor Coles, the latter who’s dad Michael and grandfather Bob were great speedway riders before him.

“All our guys looked solid last week and we are looking to show the sport what we’re capable of.”
