The last time Krispy Kreme opened a store in Edinburgh there were traffic jams. It was less frantic this time, but there was still a queue before the store officially opened at The Gyle Shopping Centre.

The chain have come a long way since 1937 when Vernon Rudolph bought a secret yeast-raised doughnut recipe from a New Orleans chef.

He rented a building and began selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts to local grocery stores and the rest is history.

The company now have 89 outlets in the united Kingdom and Hugh Cameron, the local operations manager, is confident many of the 11 million shoppers who annually visit The Gyle will pop in for a tasty treat.

Gyle Centre Manager, Andrew Cronie, who already hosts leading brands including M&S, Boots and Next,, is pleased to introduce another major retailer to his extensive portfolio.

Andrew performed the opening ceremony watched by a queue of shoppers including Edinburgh taxi driver Donna Squires.

Her grandchildren love Krispy Kreme products and she was first in the gueue and said: “I’m a Gyle shopper so this could not be better for me.

“I have my favourite in the Original Glaze but I like all of them and Krispy Kreme are the best.”

Shop worker Pauline Lynch from Uphall in West Lothian is also a fan. “Krispy Kreme are No 1,” she said.

MUNCH NOTE: The outlet is open from 9am until The Gyle closes and doughnuts are made at their nearby factory outlet at Hermiston Gait.
