Our Pick of Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2017 – An Arrangement of Shoes

‘How do we begin to remember those that are no longer with us? Do we arrange their history, their memories, their photographs….Or do we begin bottom up, by arranging their shoes?’

Originally written as part of a season showcasing 70 works to commemorate 70 years of independence in India and Pakistan, Abhishek Majumdar’s An Arrangement of Shoes is a moving, personal and energetic one-woman show set in an Indian railway colony during the first Gulf War.

On the eve of her grandfather’s burial, Muslim storyteller Rukhsar searches through her memories for something that will help her reconnect with her past, her grandfather and . . . his shoes. Embarking on a fascinating journey, she brings her home and family to life. Family history and global history powerfully intertwine to tell a unique story – not only her own, but also of the wide-reaching consequences of war.
Directed by Maya Foa (winner of the 2015 SMK Women Demanding Justice award) and performed by Radhika Aggarwal, An Arrangement of Shoes charts the ebb and flow of love, loss and family ties whilst subtly exploring themes of globalisation and identity.
