Police are appealing for witnesses following an attempted robbery in Leith which took place around 8.40 a.m. this morning at the Day-Today Express store on Albion Road.

A 42-year-old woman was working behind the counter when a man entered and presented a knife before demanding money.

The shopkeeper refused and the male exited the store, making off eastwards on Albion Place towards Easter Road Stadium.

Inquiries are now ongoing to trace the suspect and anyone who can assist in identifying him is asked to come forward.

He is described as white, between 25 and 30-years-old with a skinny build, black hair with flecks of grey, decaying teeth and wearing a navy blue tracksuit.

Detective Sergeant Paul Greig from the Violence Reduction Unit at Gayfield Police Station said: “While the suspect did not assault the female employee, he did present a knife and we are treating this incident very seriously.

“I’d firstly like to thank the staff member for her calmness and courage, which ensured that nothing was stolen from the store and would urge anyone who was on or around Albion Road on Tuesday morning and saw anything suspicious to contact police immediately.

“Similarly, anyone with any other information that is of interest to this investigation should also get in touch.”

Those with information can contact the VRU at Gayfield via 101 and quote incident number 744 of the 20th June. Alternatively, an anonymous report can be made through the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
