Home is where the heart is – but in these trouble times for the diaspora of the desperate, migration and destination are viewed through a cracked prism where culture and colour have ambiguous agency.
Fresh from successful UK tours and residencies in the UK, USA and South Africa, State of Emergency will present a unique performance concept, examining themes of migration, identity and belonging through improvisation. Seven talented dancers, singers and musicians from the UK, South Africa, Pakistan, Italy and Japan will go through the pain and joy of creating a show LIVE on stage, delivering a rare insight into the creative process alongside a heady mix of soul, jazz, African and western forms.

State of Emergency feels like a new company but we’ve actually been producing innovative dance theatre and music for over thirty years. As an NPO of Arts Council England, we lead the field in championing the work of black choreographers in the UK. As a music producer, our work with reggae legend Lee “Scratch” Perry led to two Grammy nominations and projects with icons Keith Richards and George Clinton.
