Hearts have announced that former half-back Davie Laing has died at the age of 92.

Laing made his Hearts debut in November 1946 against Morton and he would go on to make 311 appearances for the Maroons, scoring 17 goals. His last game for Hearts was a 3-2 win over Celtic in a League Cup tie at Tynecastle in 1954 – in which Laing scored with a penalty. He joined Clyde days after and would prove to be an integral part of the Clyde team that lifted the Scottish Cup that season. He would sign for Hibernian a year later but injury restricted his appearances.

After retiring from the game in the mid-1960s, Laing forged a career in journalism with the Scottish Daily Mail and the Edinburgh Evening Dispatch. In 1969, he was appointed Hearts Public relations Officer and would edit the club’s matchday programme.

Renowned for his strength in the tackle, Davie Laing played the game fairly and with respect for his opponents at all times – a trait underlined by the fact he was never booked or sent off in his 21 years of playing the game.

The Edinburgh Reporter offers its condolences to Davie’s family at this sad time as Hearts mourn the passing of another great.
