In readiness for the Fringe the Scottish Arts Club now have a new piano.

Earlier today passers-by were intrigued by the sight of a piano lofted high above the pavement and in through the first floor window. You can watch the video below to see how it was done!

Then the process was repeated by Edinburgh Piano Movers who took great care in wrapping the new piano in blankets before it was sent up to the first floor by crane. It took about an hour to complete the swop.

The old Bechstein was in need of too much TLC and so it has been found a new home where it may have a quieter life. According to the serial number the Bechstein was built in 1922 and it has been in the club for 65 years.

The new piano is made by Feurich and has been used by a recording studio so the club is assured of its accuracy and reliability.

The ivories will start tinkling during August when the club is awaiting   guest performers such as Ron Davis and his jazz group from Canada, the young concert pianist Elena Fischer-Dieskau as part of the Club’s Fringe programme – ClubFest.

Nola Meikle the club’s immediate past president was there keeping a watchful eye on proceedings along with other members. Nola said : “We are delighted to have such a beautiful new piano in place just in time for the Fringe and all the wonderful musical acts we shall be hosting at this years ClubFest.

Nola Meikle on the right with other club members were all relieved that the move went so smoothly.

The Scottish Arts Club welcomes practitioners of all the arts.  In the 1970s the opera singer Jessye Norman visited and was accompanied on the outgoing Bechstein piano.
In the visual arts  there is a festival exhibition of pictures by Frances Macdonald, and an exhibition of masks by Teresa Hunyadi this August.
At the end of the festival the club will announce their annual award for Scottish theatre.
