Specsavers Morningside store is undergoing a £250,000 redevelopment at the end of this month.

Work on the refit will provide improved and better facilities for all customers and some new jobs will be on offer as there will be an extra test room and a soundproof audiology room too.

The new facilities will include new 3D eye scanning technology a little like an MRI. It is used for a variety of functions, including screening and management of conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. The store will also have a specialist Dry Eye Clinic.

As part of its exhaustive contact lens repertoire, the store will also now be offering Ortho Keratology, a reversible process of correcting your vision without the need for wearing spectacles or contact lenses during the day.

The process involves scanning the shape of your eye with a high-end topographer and designing a bespoke contact lens for you to sleep in, which reshapes the surface of your cornea, so that the light is properly focussed onto the back of the eye.

Michael O’Kane, store director of Specsavers Morningside, has a great passion for children’s eyecare and the practice has become well known in the community for its fun child-friendly approach to a thorough eye examination. For those who would benefit from it, Michael also offers ‘visual stress’ assessments and eye exercises for children with reading difficulties.

Among its many other devices, the store has also invested in a HESS test.

The test (which is usually only applied in an eye hospital) will measure the complex muscles that move the eyes, determining which muscles and nerves require treatment, when someone has double vision or neurological problems.

It will continue to offer Digital Precision Eyecare, a cutting-edge way of selecting and fitting customers’ glasses, using imaging software on tablet devices.

As well as making up to 80 more appointments available per week, the revamp will see customers being offered an extended range of Specsavers’ own and designer frames to choose from.

Michael says: ‘The staff here in Morningside are committed to providing our customers with the best optical service around and we have one of the strongest offerings in the area when it comes to optical and hearing services.

‘The decision to invest in our store supports our growing business needs and has been carefully planned to ensure that we offer the best possible service to our customers and the local community.

‘With new state-of-the-art equipment, an increase in test rooms available, and the introduction of the OCT scanning equipment, I’m proud to say that the store is moving into the future of eyecare and we are looking forward to welcoming new and existing customers.’

The store will be closed from 28 August until 11 September. The store will re-open to the public on 11 September. The grand launch unveiling the completed new store, with festivities is scheduled for 23 September.
