A police investigation is underway after a 70-year-old pensioner suffered serious facial injuries in an assault by a man who walking a “rottweiler-type” dog along Duncan Place towards Wellington Place around  2.50pm yesterday.

The attacker is a white male, aged around 20, stocky build with  mid-length light brown hair and a local accent.

At the time of the assault he was wearing a dark sweater and dark jogging bottoms.

Detective Constable Alastair Paisley, of Gayfield CID, said: “This was a senseless and vicious attack resulting in serious injuries for the victim.

“We are keen to trace the man walking a Rottweiler-type breed of dog who was seen to run off in the direction of Duke Street following the attack.

The injured man was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and released following treatment.
