The foodbank do not require people to be referred, and locals can get food simply by calling them or popping into the shop.

A spokesperson for the Board and staff of at Muirhouse Housing Association said: “It’s a sad fact that foodbanks have become necessary in this modern day, however, they provide such a crucial support for those that need it.

“The dedication and care shown by Tenants and Residents In Muirhouse (TRIM) and the Muirhouse Community Shop is both an example and inspiration to us all.

“The concept of caring for your neighbour and your community is one of that is at the heart of Muirhouse Housing Association and this is alive and well in Muirhouse.

“When our Board learnt of the scale of people requiring support, over 70 emergency food parcels during the festive season last year, our board and staff felt compelled to act swiftly to support such a worthwhile cause.

“We are proud to support TRIM and the Community Shop and we share their passion to see a thriving Muirhouse community.”

Demands for parcels from the foodbank have already increased over the last week and they are expected to keep rising as Christmas approaches.

TRIM chairman, Robert Pearson, said : “We have already seen an increase in the number of requests for food from local people.

“People don’t need to be referred to use our foodbank – all they have to do is ask for help – and that can be something people don’t like doing.

“We are here to help anyone who lives in the local area who may need food over the festive period.

“If anyone needs food please don’t hesitate to contact us and we will gladly provide a food parcel.”
