Two women have been taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation after a fire in an Edinburgh flat. Another woman was treated at the scene by ambulance staff.

Fire crews were called to the blaze in Bridge Street, Colinton, at around 6.45am on 7 October.
Four fire appliances were sent to the incident and the fire was extinguished by around 8.30am. The bedroom of the property was completely gutted by fire.

Fire investigation officers remain at the scene to carry out an investigation into the cause of the fire.
A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said: “Early indications suggest there was no working smoke alarm in the property. A working smoke alarm is vital. It gives early warning when a fire starts and gives you time to escape.

“The occupants of the flat took in a significant amount of smoke and needed to be taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment.

“We can’t stress enough the importance of having a smoke alarm in your home and testing it regularly to make sure it works.

“Smoke can kill. Please take the time to make your home safer and protect yourself and those you live with.
