Local people in Leith are being given the chance to make some very tough decisions on local funding.

A pilot project called ‘£eith Decides’, run by the Leith Neighbourhood Partnership, will give the local community power to determine the allocation of Community Grant Funding. Around £16,000 is available for local groups.

Anyone who lives or works in Leith is invited to a special voting event at Leith Academy on Saturday 27 November at 1.00pm.

Over the last few weeks, applications have been flooding in from local groups, residents associations, environmental projects, lunch clubs, schools and parent councils as well as others.

Now the public who attend the £eith Decides event will be asked to make decisions on what group should get the funding and how much money they will receive.

In an ‘X Factor’ style vote, the public will be asked to score each group out of five, with the winners receiving funding of up to £1,000 each.

Councillor Jenny Dawe, Leader of the City of Edinburgh Council , said: “This is a worthwhile project focusing on the local groups in Leith and is good example of empowering communities by devolving funding decisions to a local level. The method of voting should ensure participants are full involved in assessing the worth of the applications in Leith”
