The Council has issued a draft framework for the Waterfront and Leith areas of the city. They have compiled this impressive 60 odd page document in collaboration with some of the landowners in the area and now it is your turn to have a say in what might happen in this area of the city. You have until 28th March 2011 to make a comment online, or write a letter to the Planning Department. The Scotsman has a good analysis of what the draft document actually says, and states that the waterfront may yet be one of the city’s ‘great streets’. The Guardian Edinburgh also has a very informative article about the plans with photos and illustrative drawings (beauty of the internet!)

A wee flurry of tweeting last night about the fire which broke out in Nicolson Street, but Lothian and Border Fire and Rescue Service reported that they had it under control. Councillor Cameron Rose was on the ball though – even had what appears to be an ‘on-the-scene’ photo……This fire was just across the road from the empty and boarded up Odeon Cinema, according to reports.

The Scotsman tells us that Britannia needs £100,000 of repairs and will be moved to a dry dock in Leith for about a month this year, to allow for the work deemed necessary by the ship’s insurers. It should be worth it since Britannia will be used in 2012 as part of the Olympics events to be held here in Edinburgh.

Suitably Despairing tells us about the various programmes on TV and radio this week which deal with Green issues. One of these is the plight of the bee, which, according to some is under world wide threat. STV Local also carries a story on the Lottery funding that will allow Gorgie City Farm to form a bee and butterfly area. Her Majesty the Queen (we will restrain ourselves from calling her the Queen Bee…..oops we just did!) has installed beehives on many of the rooftops in central London. Are there any plans here to do the same? Surely we have more green spaces in Edinburgh than they have in London? Hmmm.. we feel a story coming on….

A German wind energy company has just opened its offices in Edinburgh, predicting an intensive investment drive in Scotland, reported NewNet. The city is already home to several renewable energy firms, such as Pelamis and Aquamarine Power, both developing wave technology devices. Any others we should know about?
