Stephen Deuchar is to deliver the lecture What is Art?

Stephen Deuchar was appointed Director of the Art Fund in January 2010 after twelve years as Director of Tate Britain, during which time he redisplayed and reinterpreted the Tate collection of British art with a view to showing the works of the great British painters in their cultural and social context. He was responsible for saving for the nation Turner’s Blue Rigi watercolour for £4.95 million with support from the Art Fund, and has also been active in presenting British art in an international context by sending exhibitions from the Tate around the world. At the Art Fund he looks forward to continuing the recent policy of purchasing, and even commissioning, contemporary works as well as saving old treasures.

Dr Deuchar holds a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of London, and was Andrew Mellon Fellow at Yale University in 1981/82. He was a Curator and Exhibitions Director at the National Maritime Museum for twelve years before joining Tate Britain, and has published a number of books and articles on British art. He lists his recreation as kart racing and has won two team championships, and is also an active member of the Lotus Seven Club.
