Police in Edinburgh have released CCTV images of two men that they wish to trace in connection with their inquiries into a serious assault that happened in the city centre on Saturday, December 17.

A 25-year-old man suffered a broken jaw in the assault, which happened around 3.45am, outside the 24-hour Scotmid store in Nicolson Street.

He was attacked after he went to the assistance of the shop’s security guard, who was remonstrating with two men.

The men the police would like to speak to are described as white, and in their early 20s. The first is described as being of stocky build, 5ft 8ins tall, wearing a dark top and jeans, Timberland style boots and a checked trapper hat.

The second man has a slim build, 5ft 10ins tall, with short dark hair, and wearing a grey top and jeans.

Following the assault, both men left making their way south along Nicolson Street.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: “The CCTV images show both men within the Scotmid store, and we are appealing to anyone who recognises them to come forward.

“Anyone with any other information that can assist our inquiries should also get in touch.”

Anyone with any information should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or Crimestoppers in confidence and complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.

A new community grants scheme has just been launched by Edinburgh and Lothians Greenspace Trust, designed to help get people reaping the health benefits of community gardening. The Trust is a charity body which works to create and improve urban greenspaces such as woodlands, community gardens, parks, play areas, school grounds and cycle paths.

“ELGT believes that community gardening can be a sustainable and cost-effective means of improving health and well-being, self confidence and self worth. The ‘Growing Communities for Health’ small grants programme is designed to help groups and communities in Edinburgh develop and improve therapeutic and community gardens for people affected by health and social inequalities.

This fund is looking to support community gardening projects, which will benefit people with existing health issues, those experiencing cultural or social barriers to accessing greenspaces or those living in areas of deprivation.

We can award up to £750 to support your community gardening project, to support activities such as buying tools, equipment and materials, creating raised beds, setting up composting facilities, paying for volunteer expenses etc.”

The scheme is supported by NHS Lothian and The City of Edinburgh Council
