Lesley Hinds is standing as Labour candidate for the Inverleith Ward.

She first became a Councillor in 1984 and has been a member of Edinburgh District Council and the City of Edinburgh Council. Currently the Councillor for the Inverleith ward, she has held numerous positions in the council, including Leader and Lord Provost.

Born in Dundee she has lived in Edinburgh for over 30 years. Drylaw, the area she represents, has been her home while bringing up her three children. Lesley is a qualified primary school teacher. In addition she is a Past Chair of NHS Health Scotland-appointed by the Health Minister. She is a member of Unite the Union, CND, the Co-op Party and Scotmid.

Lesley has extensive experience of board membership in a personal capacity, as well as representing the Council in numerous public and private sector organisations, such as Edinburgh’s Telford College, Pilton Partnership, Edinburgh’s Mela, Dance Base, Edinburgh Fairtrade City, One City Trust and the City of Literature.

Lesley has significant detailed knowledge of health matters, regeneration issues, education, community safety, policing, social inclusion and housing issues, because of her work on various boards and community organisations over 30 years. Also, she has knowledge of various industries such as retail, tourism (former Chair Tourist Board) and was Convenor of Lothian and Borders Police Board for 4 years. The first chair of Edinburgh’s Fairtrade City, she has campaigned on international development issues including Scotland-Malawi partnership, Make Poverty History Campaign, as well as establishing and chairing the Tsunami Taskforce.

Recently as Labour’s Spokesperson for Health and Social Care, and working with disability groups, she helped win a vote in the Council, which stopped the privatisation of Care and Support services for the most vulnerable in Edinburgh. She is currently the Labour Spokesperson for Transport and Infrastructure.
