This will be the second time this tournament has been held in the memory of Richard Docherty, one of Scotland’s finest players, who sadly passed away at the age of 27 in June 2010. The event was first held in 2012 and will, again, be at the Engage Sports facility at Edinburgh Napier University and, again, will be organised by Richard’s family and friends throughout Scottish Hockey. The tournament will include teams from Scotland and Germany, as well as several composite teams of past and present Internationalists and Olympians. This year will also see the introduction of a Women’s tournament to run alongside the men’s. As with last year, the event will also include coaching and demonstration games, as well as ‘Meet and Greet’ sessions with some of the players.

The men’s teams playing will be, in Pool ‘A’, Inverleith (Scotland), HC RDG (Netherlands) and Team Alba (Scotland – composite) and, in Pool ‘B’ Grossflottbecker (Germany – current holders), Menzieshill (Scotland) and Globetrotters HC (World Select) . The women’s teams are Inverleith HC, Cala HC and Grange HC (all Scotland). All the matches will be played in a ’round-robin’ format and the finals will be held on the 6th January.

Unfortunately, due to nature of the venue, seats are restricted to 300 per session and must be applied for before 23rd December via RDIndoorcup@hotmail.co.uk  Applicants must include a booking name, number and type of tickets (adult @ £3.00, U10 free), choice of sessions and a contact telephone number. Confirmation of ‘success’ and payment details will be by return e-mail. All profits from the ticket sales will be passed on to a variety charities and good causes close to Richard’s family. Full details are available via the Scottish Hockey Union website http://www.scottish-hockey.org.uk/2012/november-2012/richard-docherty-indoor-cup.aspx and this includes a link to the Press/Public Release PDF which includes complete details of how to apply for tickets.

This promises to be a good round off to the New Year festivities and, even if the standard of hockey is only half as good as the Eurohockey tournament earlier this year, it will still be at the dizzy heights the average club player can only dream about. Should be better, though.
