Reacting to the announcement by The Royal Mail  that the Strathearn Road delivery office has been saved for the “foreseeable future”, Jim Eadie MSP for Edinburgh Southern, who has spearheaded the campaign to save the office said:-“This is fantastic news and a great result for the local community who have campaigned to save this vital service.

“The Royal Mail did not have a statutory obligation to consult with the local community over the closure of the delivery office. As the local MSP I carried out an extensive survey of over 2,000 local households and was left in no doubt about the strength of opposition to this closure. Of the 250 plus households who responded to the survey over 90% of residents opposed the closure.

“In March I called for these ‘misguided’ plans to be abandoned. I am delighted that the Royal Mail has seen sense and not only listened to but acted upon the views of local people.

“This is a victory for common sense and safeguards an essential local service which people rely on, particularly older people who faced the prospect of leaving the security of their neighbourhood to collect their parcels.

“We need to ensure that we retain the footfall of people shopping within our local communities to support local businesses. This decision keeps Strathearn Road delivery office at the heart of the local community in line with the overwhelming views of local people who live in the surrounding areas in Marchmont and the Grange.”
