The City of Edinburgh (Portobello Park) Bill – Spokes Bike Breakfast – Nile Rodgers at Summerhall – Induction days at secondary schools – Film Festival begins today

The first meeting of the Portobello Park Bill Committee takes place today at Holyrood. You ought to be able to follow proceedings on the Scottish Parliament website.

The bill is an attempt by the council to change the law to allow them to build a new high school in part of Portobello Park to replace the old school.

Should you wish to object to the Bill, you have  a few days left  as the objection period ends at 5pm on 24 June 2013.

A leaflet containing information for prospective objectors is also available on the Parliament’s website – from “Parliamentary Business”, go to “Bills”, “Bills Explained” and then “Private Bills”.

Objections must be lodged with:

The Non-Government Bills Unit,
The Scottish Parliament,
Edinburgh,
EH99 1SP

Telephone 0131 348 5246

E-mail: private.bills@scottish.parliament.uk

Objections are required to:

  • be in English or Gaelic;
  • be printed, typed or clearly hand-written;
  • set out clearly the name, address and, where available, other contact details of the objector (telephone, e-mail and fax);
  • be signed (where applicable by a person duly authorised and showing that person’s position or designation) and dated;
  • set out clearly the nature of the objection i.e. why the objector opposes the Bill;
    explain whether the objection is to the whole Bill and/or specified provisions in which case these should be clearly identified;
  • specify how the objector’s interests would be adversely affected by the Bill, for example because of anticipated loss of earnings, or reduction in property values, adverse impact on employment or business, loss of amenity etc; and
  • be accompanied by the lodging fee determined by the Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body (currently ÂŁ20.00).

It is important to emphasise that an objection must explain whether it is against the whole Bill and/or specified provisions. In either case the objection must specify how the objector’s interests will be adversely affected by the Bill.

All admissible objections will be posted on the Parliament’s website (but with all personal details, other than the names of objectors, removed).

Fourth Year
Forrester High School

For three days, beginning yesterday and finishing tomorrow, all of the current P7 pupils are attending the High Schools they will be going to after the summer for three days to experience secondary school life.

18-20 June will be three exciting, yet nerve-racking days of finding out what it’s like to be a first year.

The Primary 7s are going all over Edinburgh to experience the next six years of their education life. As I have only just started Fourth Year, I still remember my Induction days and how much they helped me when I started High School after the summer. I recall meeting people from all the other schools who were going to be in my class and year group, and being excited about new classes, but nervous about being the youngest in the school again.

One Primary Seven Student who came to Forrester High School yesterday said:-

“I enjoyed meeting new people, and getting know my new teachers and I liked the wider variety of subjects as well. I can’t wait to actually get up after summer.”
