TER Black taxi at nightA male taxi driver was assaulted and robbed of his takings in the early hours of this morning.  Two men set upon him when he stopped to pick up a group of five passengers on Springwell Place. Police in Edinburgh are appealing for witnesses.

The 44-year-old victim was driving his black cab on Springwell Place at around 2.50am when he was waved down by a female, who was in the company of four men.

Two of the men then began assaulting the driver, who fled from his vehicle to a nearby petrol station forecourt.  At the time one of the suspects has stolen a plastic money box containing a two-figure sum from the taxi before the group made off.

The victim sustained a minor injury to his shoulder and contacted police.

Officers are now urging anyone who can assist with their enquiries to come forward.

The suspects are described as male, white, late teens or early twenties. One was wearing grey and white striped tracksuit bottoms while the other had a dark coloured top with “Hollister California” written on it.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “The victim was not seriously injured during the robbery but is understandably distressed at the theft of his money.

“Anyone who was in the area on Saturday morning and remembers seeing anything suspicious, or who has information that can help trace those responsible is asked to contact police immediately.”

Those with information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or alternatively, the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111
