Crockart Welcomes Fall in Unemployment in Edinburgh West

Edinburgh’s Liberal Democrat MP, Mike Crockart, has welcomed today’s employment figures and said they demonstrate the importance of sharing economic progress across the UK.

Figures published today by the Office for National Statistics show the number of unemployed claimants in Edinburgh West was 1,234 in April 2014. This is 399 lower than April 2013 and 62 lower than March 2014.

Employment in Scotland also increased by 29,000 over the quarter, and increased by 67,000 over the year, to stand at 2,585,000.

Commenting, Mr Crockart said:

“The figures today are great news for Edinburgh, Scotland and the United Kingdom.

“The rise in employment has been supported by the Government’s campaign to increase the number of opportunities available to young people through apprenticeships and paid work placements. I have recently hired an apprentice in my Edinburgh office and will continue to encourage businesses in Edinburgh to do the same.

“This recovery would not be happening without the Liberal Democrats in Government and today’s news is further proof that our plan is working and we are successfully building a stronger economy in a fairer society.
