TER LeithLate16

Promising a jam-packed programme of exhibitions and events the only place to be between 23 and 26 June is Leith.

LeithLate16 is curated by festival director and producer Morvern Cunningham who told us a little about what we should expect: “It will be four days of fun! From the opening night on Thursday 23 June which will be a one night extravaganza of art and music at 25 different venues all up and down Leith Walk. This will culminate in a big after party at The Hibernian Supporters’ Club with live performances from Nice Church and Carbs.

“We will be based over the four days at our hub which is the Out of the Blue Drill Hall on Dalmeny Street. We will have a series of different events on different days including special panel talks on Friday,  mural tours which start at Out of the Blue on Saturday and an Art Mart where artists can sell their wares on the Sunday.

“Mural tours were included in last year’s event and were very popular. About 200 people attended those tours.

“There is a series of historic murals in Leith, and in the past few years since LeithLate has been in existence we have been commissioning artists to make contemporary new murals as well. So there is a variety of old and new and the tour takes in a selection of those art works. They stretch from Out of the Blue to Leith Library where there is the iconic mural that everyone knows.”

Morvern and David Lemm posed for photos in front of the poster which Lemm has designed. This is part of a public art initiative which is being run in collaboration with Edinburgh City of Literature Trust.

Six poems about Edinburgh by contemporary poets such as Rachel McCrum, Michael Pedersen and Harry Giles, will feature on the specially designed large posters displayed on advertising sites around the Leith area for the month of June. So watch out for these beginning to appear very soon.
