Edinburgh-based writer Russell Jones has been shortlisted for a major international writing prize. The Half the World Global Literati Award comes with a prize of $50,000 for the winner, and a variety of $1000 runner up prizes.

Jonesā€™ book, The Talkers, is a novel for young adults. It follows a teenage girl as she hunts for her parentsā€™ killers in a matriarchal world where powerful individuals psychically control animals.

The Half the World Global Literati Award is in its first year and aims to ā€give voice to the inner lives of womenā€.

Jones says heā€™s ā€thrilled to have been shortlisted. My book deals with issues of gender inequality and the corrupting nature of power, which seem very important topics at the moment.ā€
