A 240-strong team from People’s Postcode Lottery rolled up their sleeves to help the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) clean up Cramond Beach in Edinburgh.

Having received £450,000 from players of People’s Postcode Lottery, MCS invited the team from the charity lottery, based in the capital, to join them on a two-hour beach clean and to learn more about their work.

During the tidy up, the team of volunteers filled 80 bin bags of rubbish weighing around a third of a ton (365kg), which is the equivalent of around two grey seals.

Marine Conservation Society spokesperson, Catherine Gemmell, said: “This stretch of beach is popular with joggers, dog walkers and families, so it’s in need of a tidy-up. It’s also important to protect marine life from eating or becoming entangled in litter.

“This was an impressive effort by the team at People’s Postcode Lottery and the beach is now looking so much better. We appreciate everyone’s hard work and we thank players for their incredible on-going support.”

Funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery helps MCS organise similar events throughout the year, including the annual Great British Beach Clean (September 16-19th) which is the biggest survey of beach litter in the UK.

People’s Postcode Lottery Ambassador Danyl Johnson, who was amongst the volunteers, said:

“Money raised by players is making such a huge difference to charities such as the Marine Conservation Society.

“It’s been a really rewarding day for everyone in the team and we are all glad to be able to play a small part in the fantastic work that MCS is doing throughout Great Britain. I hope we’ve made Cramond beach a cleaner place for everyone who comes here this summer. All we need now is some sunshine!”

More than £124.1 million in total has been raised so far by players of People’s Postcode Lottery for charities around Great Britain and internationally.
