Tiger in Blossom: A tale to burn bright and set the heart alight.

From What Immortal Eye Do You Spy?

Fresh from the Wow Children’s Book Festival of Korea Modl return to the Fringe with an adaptation of the Korean folktale The Woodcutter and Tiger Brother.

Modl’s singular visual narratives render the heart with sinew tugging tiger soft-pawing nuanced passion. Timeless values of family love, friendship and loyalty are empathised through the eyes of a tiger. The Edinburgh Reporter took paws to put some questions to Modl Theatre.

TER : Tell us about yourself.

MT : Established in 1989, we specialise in producing childrens’ plays and Korean original musical comedies. Modl Theatre is a full member of National Theatre Association of Korea and International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People. Dating back to 1992, we have been holding performing arts festivals for children from underprivileged backgrounds, touring around Korea.

TER : Can you tell us a little bit about your show, what can we expect?

MT : Tiger in Blossom is an adaptation of the Korean folktale Woodcutter and Tiger Brother. In Korean folklore, the tiger is a loyal and affectionate friend rather than a scary and frightening animal and so this heart-warming story shows the real value of family love through the relationship between the tiger and his human brother.

TER : Why did you decide to perform your show at the Edinburgh Fringe?

MT : Beginning with the invitation from Japan-Korea play festival for children and youth, Modl Theatre is dedicated to showcasing high quality Korean performances all over the world. We have done so at the Edinburgh Fringe before and we are excited to be coming back.

TER :  What makes your show different?

MT : A beautiful story of unconditional love, our show is a must-see for the whole family but with a Korean twist, it is unlike any show your children will have seen before.

TER : Who would enjoy seeing your show?

MT : Children and adults alike as well as everyone interested in discovering the extraordinary world of Korean folklore.

TER : What has been the best advice you have been given?

MT : A single flower does not blossom by itself, no matter its strength. In the same way, performers and audiences must come together in good faith so that we can all enjoy the fruits of our creativity.

TER : What show, apart from yours, would you recommend at the Edinburgh Fringe and why?

MT : We have two other shows at C venues this year. Our five-star show The Dandelion’s Story is another one for the kids but we are also premiering our drama Girl on the theme of Korea’s ‘comfort women’ of WWII. The Korean company Brush Theatre also have their exciting production The Tiniest Frog Prince In The World, which is a modern adaptation of the Brothers Grimm tale using puppetry and video.

TER :  What do you think audiences will enjoy most about your show?

MT :  Every audience member is bound to be touched by our uplifting and endearing performance.
