Mark Oxley

Hibs’ goalkeeper Mark Oxley is poised to join former boss Phil Brown at Southend United.

Oxley is joining Southend as a replacement for Daniel Bentley, who was linked with a move to Rangers recently.

Brown signed Oxley when he was manager of Hull City however he failed to make an impact there and moved to Hibs two years ago under Alan Stubbs.

He started his career in style, SCORING the winning goal against Livingston at Easter Road.

Ox was the first choice keeper until he was booked for time wasting during a Scottish cup quarter-final replay against Inverness despite protesting that he had lost a contact lens.

The booking meant that he was suspended for the semi-final and Stubbs brought Conrad Logan in on a short term deal.

Logan performed heroics in the semi-final earning legendry status amongst the Hibs fans and he retained his place for the remainder of the season including the cup final and Oxley had to be content with a place on the bench.

Logan has also been released leaving Hibs with only Otso Virtanen as goalkeeper with trialist Ross Laidlaw as backup.

Speaking to the Southend Echo, Brown said: “Mark is due to be at the training ground tomorrow and I would be very pleased to get a deal for him done.

“I paid money for him at Hull City when he was about 16 and was very highly rated.

“It would be great to work with him again now he’s developed into a very good goalkeeper.

“He’s got games under his belt for both Oldham and Hibernian but a change in management there has enabled us to get him which is very good news.”
