According to research by Edinburgh Marriott Hotel the places that locals most want to visit include the Royal Yacht Britannia moored at Ocean Terminal and Rosslyn Chapel made famous by the Da Vinci Code.

The thing is, that these are two of the attractions which are still on the must visit list, and locals have not yet been there.

Other places like Camera Obscura, the Botanics, the Scottish National Gallery and Holyrood Palace are also popular with locals.

Speaking about the findings in the report, General Manager at Edinburgh Marriott Hotel, Peter Dornom, said: ā€œWe are dedicated to helping travellers of all kinds make the most of their time in Edinburgh so we are always interested to learn more about how, why and where people enjoy our city.

ā€œItā€™s particularly interesting to see there are certain gems that even the people of Edinburgh havenā€™t yet explored and itā€™s encouraging to know theyā€™re still keen to put these hotspots on their to-do list.

ā€œAt Marriott, we pride ourselves on being able to facilitate breaks to suit everyone, with expert teams on-hand to help guests, visitors and locals make the most out of their stay ā€“ from finding the cityā€™s hidden gems to advising on the most exciting events and attractions ā€“ we can help people discover their very own Edinburgh break.ā€

Travel writer James Ellis said: ā€œMicrobreaks are becoming increasingly popular as people look to enjoy more breaks away from home ā€“ even if they are short in duration, people seem to feel that it gives them enough time to recharge their batteries, as well as offering the opportunity to explore new things in the area around which they live.

ā€œThe popularity of The Royal YachtĀ BritanniaĀ in this survey shows what I often feel about Yorkshire – where I live – that there are many parts of it I am still to discover.ā€
